The nickname for a law enacted as part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA), that allows individuals to continue to purchase employee health benefits for a period of 18 to 36 months following a “qualifying event” such as unemployment, death of a wage earner, divorce, or termination of minor dependent coverage.
