Certified Essential Health Benefits
Consumers can purchase pediatric dental and vision Essential Health Benefits (EHB) through public exchanges and in the private market, either as part of a medical plan or through a stand-alone plan. Medical plans must include pediatric vision benefits, while dental benefits can be excluded.
Pediatric dental EHB offered in the exchange are exchange certified, which means the federal government has agreed the benefits meet federal standards. Outside the exchange, pediatric dental EHB offered in stand-alone plans must be exchange certified to be compliant with federal standards.
Some state exchanges are managed fully or in part by the federal government. In these states, stand-alone insurers like Ameritas can apply for and achieve exchange-certified status for pediatric dental EHB plans we offer outside the exchange.
Ameritas offers exchange-certified plans in ALL federal exchange states. See if your state is one of these.
Other state exchanges are managed by the state government. In most of these states, stand-alone carriers cannot achieve exchange-certified status.
If you have a stand-alone dental plan now, even if it’s not certified, you’re not required to make any changes.
