Periodically we need to find a new dentist, perhaps due to a home or job relocation or other changes, or the retirement of a dentist you have been with for many years.
For some individuals, switching to a new dentist is relatively easy, while for others it may be a difficult process.
Your dentist is a valued partner in maintaining your oral health. So how do you find the right dentist for you and your family members? Family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers are often excellent sources for recommendations of favorite dentists in your area. You could also ask your medical doctor or pharmacist.
Things to consider when looking for a dentist
- Is the dentist in your insurance network, or is your insurance coverage accepted at the dental office?
- What are the dentist’s office hours? Will the appointment schedule meet your needs?
- Is the dental office location convenient for you and your family?
- Is the office clean and professional in appearance?
- Does the dentist explain how you can care for your teeth at home?
- What procedures does the office have in place for handling emergencies?
Evaluating and understanding your treatment options
You may want to schedule an initial visit with the dentist and his or her team of professionals to determine the status of your oral health, and provide a treatment plan. As you evaluate the plan, consider the following:
- If you have scheduling or cost concerns, ask if the plan can be accomplished in stages. Find out which parts of the treatment plan are urgent and which (if any) can be delayed.
- Make sure you understand the recommendations offered by the dentist:
- Why do I need this treatment?
- What other treatment options are available? Do they differ in cost?
- Will one option last longer than another?
- Know the costs before you agree to treatment.
- If you are still unsure about the treatment plan after visiting with your dentist, or if the treatment plan involves a surprising amount of procedures or a high cost, don’t hesitate to get a second opinion from another oral health professional.
If you’ve had to switch to a different dentist, tell me about the experience. Was it easy to make the change? How did you go about finding a new dentist? What advice would you share with others? I’ll gather your feedback and post it in a future blog. –Ken
